Amanouz Café fills a small
space on Main Street in Northampton, and offers
a wide selection
of Moroccan food, from classics like falafel to impressive
tagines. Checking out breakfast at Amanouz is always
a good idea - the restaurant's North African
take on classics like omelets is exceptionally tasty.

When
we last visited Amanouz Cafe back in the mid 1990s, the
cookery of North Africa (in which the
Cafe specializes) was a new and exotic contribution to
the region's restaurant scene... Couscous, harisa, and
tahini are now as much staples of restaurant kitchens
as are
beef and potatoes. The menu
at Amanouz is still inspired by food traditions of Saharan
Africa... Although we certainly enjoyed the savory items
we ordered, it's
the sweets that would most likely bring us back to Amanouz...
Enjoyed with a cup of the restaurant's high quality coffee,
each pastry truly satisfied. Amanouz, which operates out
of a Main Street storefront, offers the typical Northampton
cafe experience -- long,
narrow space, minimalist decor, and locally produced artwork
displayed on the walls.

Once
in a while, in the midst of all the pizza and wings that
frequent the typical college student’s diet, it’s
nice to have a change of pace. Amanouz Café, located
at 44 Main St., Northampton, Mass., offers just that.
With an eclectic mix of both Mediterranean and Moroccan
classics, and an award for “Best Mediterranean
Restaurant” by the Valley Advocate Readers’ Poll,
diners can be sure that their meal will be anything but
ordinary. The atmosphere is lively and exotic, with ethnic
music playing in the background, staff delivering food
to customer’s tables, fresh pastries on display
at the front counter, and the constant warm aroma of
herbal tea lingering in the air. The food at Amanouz
is fresh, flavorful and boasts the flavors of places
much more exotic than Northampton, Mass. So, if you’re
looking for a change from the usual bar food and sandwiches,
this tiny café is a sure thing.

After reading all about the traditional cuisine
and sweet mint tea of Morocco I was more than ready to
experience it myself when I headed to Amanouz Café in
Northampton, Massachusetts. Located on Main Street this
unassuming café specializes in the mouth-watering
aromas and sumptuous tastes of Moroccan cuisine transporting
it from the North African Sahara to this small New England
town... As a non meat-eater I have found myself
in many situations at restaurants where I am forced to
nibble on a few lettuce leaves or find myself, once again,
ordering the tuna melt because every other option on
the menu is loaded with meat... Extremely full and more
than satisfied by my delicious lunch I walked away from
Amanouz Café that afternoon already planning what
to order during my next visit. With so many delicious vegetarian
options I was happy to know that I could enjoy traditional
Moroccan cuisine in such a wonderful atmosphere so close
to home.

Moroccan
and Mediterranean specialities (plenty of cous cous salads
and pocket sandwiches)
in a small,
informal
setting. Counter service. Price range: less than $10
(average meal/person, w/o drinks). The cafe supports
local artists
by displaying their work on the walls. Thursdays the
cafe hosts "French night," where transplanted
and wannabe Francophones can come and practice their
language
skills. Moroccan food is light, with no cream or dairy
products and is prepared with homemade spices and fresh
ingredients.

The
tasty Amanouz Café, specializes
in Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine. The small café has
an easy, mellow atmosphere. It's a great place to grab
a pre-movie humos sandwich or
to sit and talk over a cup of a coffee and tasty baklava...
So if you're in the mood for good falafel or a sweet
Moroccan desert, head to Amanouz. And if you're feeling
French,
give Thursday night a try.

Great
Mediterranean food in a laid-back, friendly atmosphere.
The price is right and the folks behind the counter couldn't
be friendlier. Everything is cooked to order in their
relatively small kitchen, so it does take a while, but
it's totally worth waiting for. Anything on their giant
menu is good, but I particularly like the Merquez couscous,
their Moroccan Salad, or their Lentils with Lamb and
couscous. Definitely worth a trip if you're in the area.
